Locked in with Hayley

I got up at 6:00 this morning, got dressed, and went downstairs for my first cup of coffee before getting Hunter up.  Once I felt a little more awake, I got Hunter out of bed, gave him his clothes and I got his lunch and backpack together.  Everything went smoothly and I was looking forward to when both kids would be out of the house.  At 6:55 I checked on Hayley, who was still sleeping.  This made me happy because then I can drive Hunter to the bottom of the driveway to catch his bus, and I get a little more time to myself before Hayley has to get up and get ready for school.

At 7:15 I heard Hayley up.  I rushed upstairs to her room to get her out of bed before she got into some kind of mischief on the second floor without me knowing.  I went into her room all smiles and said “oh is there a princess in this room?”  Hayley responded by saying “go to Shoprite?”  As I opened her last window blind, I said “we will go to Shoprite one day, but today is school!” Immediately she screamed ‘NO SCHOOL!!!”, got up in a flash locked her door and slammed it shut.  As I stood there in utter shock, I realized we were locked in her room.  We have the door knob turned around so the lock faces the hall.  Hayley used to get up when we first put her to bed and roam the halls getting into all sorts of things (stuffed animals in the toilet, soap/cream smeared on the bathroom walls and mirror, change into several different outfits that wind up thrown all over, trash Hunter’s room etc…).  So we USED to lock her in her room until she fell asleep and then we would unlock and open the door.  Hayley is a pretty good sleeper so she rarely got out of bed during the night.

As the shock wore off I started to panic.  I frantically started pulling on and trying to turn the door handle, I started pacing back and forth across the room, sweat starting to run down my face.  I turned to Hayley and said “do you realize what you did?  We are locked in this room and there is no way out!!”  She just smiled at me and curled up under her blanket on her comfy bed……..

I am claustrophobic.  I DO NOT like closed, small spaces, the thought of being trapped etc.  When I go on an airplane I CANNOT think about being closed in or I will have a panic attack.  Although Hayley has a big room, trapped is trapped.  I left my phone downstairs so I couldn’t call for help, I checked out the windows to see if there was anyway I could climb out.  There is a red maple tree in front of one of her windows but the top branches are much too thin to climb on.  the other 3 windows you would fall straight down.  Now I am really sweating and panicking while Hayley is singing “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer” in bed.  I opened her two windows over the driveway and sat on her desk sucking in as much of the outside air as I could.

I finally got hold of myself and tried to think rationally.  Something long and sharp, that’s what I would need to try to unlock the door.  Ha ha that is a laugh in Hayley’s room.  Because of her Autism, she has no regard for danger so we make sure everything is safe in her room.  I found a hair comb on a tiara and tried sticking one of the points into the lock, no luck.  Then I took a picture off the wall and tried the nail in the lock, too thick.  I broke the crown off her princess pig bank and tried one of those points, too big.  NOW WHAT??  I had visions of being trapped in her room all day, no bathroom, no water, not being able to get Hunter off the bus……………

Next thought.  I knew Hayley’s bus was going to come, and her bus comes right up to my garage.  I took out a drawer with plastic fruit and kitchen items and figured I would take off the screen on one of the driveway windows and start throwing plastic fruit down on the bus in hopes that the driver or aide would get off the bus and come to our rescue!!!  But knowing the driver and aide, they would probably hightail it out of here scared as hell.

Ok, fruit is ready but another thought comes to mind….Hayley’s play jewelry.  I started to rummage through the drawer of jewelry looking for something sharp (who was I kidding?)  I came across some small bangle bracelets.  I figured maybe if I could break one of them the broken wire might fit in the lock!  Broke the first bracelet, too wide.  Broke the second bracelet, too thin.  Meanwhile, Hayley is singing and singing in her bed.  Defeat was getting hold of me when I broke one more bracelet. With sore hands I dejectedly I walked to the door and tried the lock.  One, two three times and ZAP!!!! the lock opened!!!!!!  I was ecstatic, we were free……………………………………I would not have to resort to the plastic fruit after all.  I was giddy with relief.

I got Hayley downstairs, called the bus company to say Hayley would not be ready for the bus in 5 minutes and that I would drive her to school.  She got dressed, medicine, personal hygene etc.  Hayley was very compliant which is not the norm.  Finally, we get into the car.  We now have a 30  minute drive to Hayley’s school.  I say “ok Hayley, we made it, now on to school”.  You know what she said to me?  “Go to Shoprite?”……………………..

Overdue Gym Update and Other Stuff

It has been a long while since I gave an update on how the gym and diet is going.  I have definitely been procrastinating.  It hasn’t been good 😦 .  I faithfully went to the gym and ate properly until the beginning of August when the kids got out of school and we left for Florida. We went to Disney World for 4 days and to our house on Amelia Island for a little over a week. I will say I didn’t do any real exercise and we had a lot of take out for dinner.  I have a hard time choosing the right meal when we order take out.   Since then it has been downhill.  I gained back 6 lbs.!  I am bummed.

There have been several stresses recently that has affected me.  When this happens, I tend to lose sight of what it is I am supposed to do.  So I guess you can say I have fallen off the wagon.  I am trying to pump myself up at get back on track again.

We have not renewed our gym membership for a variety of reasons so I must do this on my own.  We have a treadmill and all sorts of equipment in a room in our basement, it is just a matter of me being diligent and actually go down and workout.  I am going to go down immediately after Hayley gets on the school bus at 7:50am.  It is the only chance I have of following through.

Planning healthy meals is the next step.  No more take out or throwing something together quickly.  Another thing we have to change is eating after Hunter and Hayley go to bed.  It is stressful eating with them.  The behaviors tend to make Dave and I shovel our food down so that we don’t even know what we ate.  We need to be patient, SLOW DOWN and try to make the best of a difficult situation.  I know it is unhealthy to eat so late. I want to plan dinners ahead of time so I am not scrambling around.  Also, start eating my oatmeal again in the morning and having a light lunch.

It is so difficult to get in shape.   I know for me, once I fall apart it is so hard to get back on track, and start taking the mindset of “its too late now, I will start tomorrow”.  The problem is that tomorrow never comes.

Now I feel I am ready for a fresh start.  The kids are back in school so I have a lot of time during the day to keep myself in check.  I am looking forward to a positive outcome because I know it can be done.  I have done it before, there is no looking back…………….

Westie Wednesday! Nova and the School Bus

First let me say this is my last Westie Wednesday post.  Katie will be back from Paris next week and will be taking Nova to Virginia with her.  Katie will again resume writing Westie Wednesday.  I am REALLY going to miss Nova!  She has been so much fun and a lot of company.  Get ready Katie, I AM going to cry!!

Nova loves to ride in the car.  As soon as she hears keys, Nova is under my feet anxious to see if she is going bye-bye or not.  I have taken her to places that I don’t have to get out of the car, such as the bank and gas station.  Nova gets so excited looking out the window and the best thing is even though you can hear her crying with excitement, she doesn’t bark at anything or anyone.

Nova also rides in the car when I pick up Hunter from the bus.  As soon as she hears me say “let’s get Hunter” she is at the back door.  Nova jumps into the back seat and stands looking out the window.  Every once in a while she will spot the evil cat across the street and freak out.  I wish I could let her eat that cat! I calm her down though.  Hunter is always happy to see Nova and vice a versa. When we get back to the house Nova happily jumps out of the car and into the house.

Hayley’s bus comes up my driveway to pick her up in the morning and drop her off in the afternoon.  Nova has been POSSESSED to get out to that bus.  A few times when she squeezed past me and got into the garage I would yell “NOVA GET IN THE HOUSE!!”  Tail tucked between her legs she would comply. As I have written before, Hayley and Nova is a toxic combination.  Nova dearly loves Hayley even though she has been thrown, dunked, tail pulled, pet a little too hard, legs bent in the wrong direction, etc. I do believe Hayley loves Nova in her own distorted way.  I don’t want the two of them anywhere near the bus together because who knows what Hayley might drum up for Nova.

Yesterday. Hayley’s bus came  home a little early so I was rushing down the hall, tripping over Nova trying to get out the door and close it before Nova could get out.  I calmly walked to the bus as Hayley was coming down the stairs. She started walking towards the house and I said good-bye to the bus driver and started to walk away.  She called for me to come back.  As I went to the door I happened to glance at the window where Hayley’s seat is……..Nova!  There she was standing up on the seat looking out the window at me.  To say I was surprised is an understatement.  I guess I was mostly shocked! Nova must have gotten past me somehow when I was shutting the door and got on the bus.  The driver just smiled (she doesn’t speak much english) and frankly, I couldn’t believe she didn’t react in any way.  I started to laugh because Nova looked so funny looking out the bus window. When I got over the shock I said, “Nova get off the bus”.  She happily came off the bus and swaggered by me with her tail in the air and her ears perked up.

I swear Nova had a smug look on her face as she walked into the house………I LOVE that dog 🙂

Westie Wednesday! Nova’s pool experience…….

Ok, so I wasn’t here for Nova’s first pool experience but was filled in by 5 people as to what her experience was like.

Let me first say, Nova isn’t really opposed to water.  When Katie tells Nova she is going to take a bath, Nova jumps right into the tub to wait.  Her face shows she isn’t totally enthralled with the water, but the good dog she is, tolerates the bath patiently.

Nova loves the beach!  Not so much for the water but the sand.  She runs and digs, digs and runs and becomes totally covered in sand.  Nova will walk close to the water but not particularly in it.  Katie on the other hand will tell you that Nova LOVES!!! the ocean.  I don’t think love is quite the right word though.  I again would use the word tolerate.  Katie brings Nova in the water and lets the waves wash over her.  Drowned rat (sorry Nova) is what she looks like.  The funniest thing I ever saw was while at Florida last year, Katie had Nova on a boogy board!  Yes, Nova stood stoically on the board as Katie guided it over the waves.  I will say the dog has good balance.

Now to her pool experience.  Since Nova has been here she doesn’t really go too close to the pool.  Probably the pool looks like a giant bathtub that she really doesn’t want to partake in.  Every once in a while Hayley would pick up Nova and throw her, yes THROW Nova in the pool.  Fortunately it wasn’t too far in so little Nova would doggy paddle back.  While I was in Paris I was told of an “incident” that happened with Hayley and Nova.  Immediately I felt a little light-headed because I could just imagine what happened.  Well, I was told that one day while Hunter & Hayley were in the pool with our two babysitters, Hayley all of a sudden JUMPED out of the pool, grabbed Nova and threw her into the water.  Unfortunately for Nova, no one was close by so Hayley, who we really feel thinks Nova is a moving stuffed animal, decided to “dunk her”.  Not once, not twice but three times.  Chaos erupted as the babysitters and Hunter ran to Nova’s rescue.  They retrieved Nova, who at this point was too stunned to doggy paddle, and brought her out of the pool and dried her with a towel.  Meanwhile, Hayley was jumping and laughing for joy!  Nova on the other hand was shell-shocked.  I was told she wanted to go in the house in the worse way.  Dave came to her rescue and brought her in.  Nova hasn’t walked anywhere close to the pool since then.

Nova is a loving, trusting dog and for some reason even though Hayley also likes to pull Nova’s legs like you would a wishbone, the dog keeps going back for more 🙂

Westie Wednesday – Musical Chairs

I haven’t kept up with this blog for Katie for the last two weeks because I was getting ready for Paris and then was in Paris for a week.

Nova has now been staying with us for over 5 weeks!  It has gone by so fast and Katie will be picking her up in 3 weeks.  I am going to miss her.  I can’t help but spoil Nova, she is sooooooo cute.  I buy her toys now and then (yes Katie, the pile has grown, she even has a duck that quacks!)  I buy her special treats and Nova gets one every time she goes outside.  I was horrified to find out that while in Paris, Dave only remembered the first day to give her a treat and then she had none until I got home.  That is probably why Nova was kissing my feet as I walked in the door.  Now to Dave’s defense, I do not blame him for this misdeed.  He was working, taking care of Hunter and Hayley with Autism and keeping up with the house.

This dog has completely taken over.  Nova is the queen and we are her servants.  In the beginning Nova followed me EVERYWHERE.  Now that she has gotten comfortable (and I mean really comfortable), she doesn’t follow me as much.  I find her in various parts of the house just lounging around on all different chairs and sitting surfaces.

Everytime I turn around Nova is in a different chair!  She even goes and sits in rooms that we rarely use.  I call it musical chairs because I never know what chair she will be in.

Nova also loves it outside!  Our yard is large and she enjoys exploring and chasing birds and little critters.  When she gets tired though, she jumps into a chair to rest.  Nova doesn’t discriminate, any chair will do.

Nova is a very, very good dog.  She listens, rarely barks, is friendly and I have been giving her a bath weekly so she is nice and clean.  Nova can sit in any chair she wants, she is the queen of the castle and is at least using furniture that we haven’t been using in a long time!!

Gym Update……Back on Track :)

I finally went back to the gym today.  The last time I was there was 3 weeks ago!  Hunter and Hayley were home for a week until their summer program started and I had no one to babysit.  Then I spent a week getting everything ready for my Paris trip and ultimately it was off to Paris!

Even though I wasn’t exercising as much, I was running around a lot.  While in Paris I enjoyed wonderful food each day, but there was a tremendous amount of walking so I felt I was walking off whatever I had indulged in.

Once I got home, I immediately started to watch what I was eating for the most part (yes I had a nice slice of Hunter’s birthday cake).  I knew I had to get back to the gym, but on Sunday I started thinking about all I needed to do and was leaning towards waiting another week.  Thanks to my trainer, she emailed me yesterday saying she set me up for an appointment  this morning at 9:30. I am glad she took the initiative.  I knew then that I needed to go or I risked not going back at all.

Glad I went, worked out on the machines for 30 minutes and felt good about it.  I am now looking forward to going again on Thursday.  I also wanted to get weighed today so I would keep myself accountable.  Guess what?  I didn’t gain any weight at all!!!!  I was so excited to actually see what I thought to be true. Now it is just picking up where I left off and am really looking forward to continuing my weight loss journey.

Now, what to do about Hayley’s birthday cake on Saturday…………………………..

Westie Wednesday – Nova Has a Spa Day

When Dave brought Nova home a few weeks ago, she was a bit scruffy, ok, ALOT scruffy! Stringy fur, fur covering her eyes and very long nails.  This IS who Nova is.  Katie keeps Nova very clean by giving her frequent baths and she does trim Nova’s nails.  The thing is, no matter how good Nova looks after Katie bathes her, within a few days she looks scruffy again.

Nova LOVES to dig! She always digs in the backyard in Florida, and because the soil is very sandy, Nova usually is sporting a dark sandy mustache and beard.  Nothing has changed since she has been in NJ.  The problem is, Nova is digging in my new gardens, digging some spots in the new grass and worst of all, Nova totally enjoys chasing chipmunks!  This results in her digging HUGE holes in the gardens trying to find them.  Let’s just say, this behavior certainly isn’t Dave’s favorite.  Unfortunately, we have a very large chipmunk population so there is always an opportunity for Nova to hunt chipmunks and find their homes.  All this foolishness results in Nova not only sporting a dirt mustache and beard, but also, filthy paws and belly.

Even though I know her digging isn’t going to subisde, I decided that Nova needed a “spa day”.  I called a mobile groomer and had her come to my house yesterday.  Nova willing (almost too much) went with the groomer while merrily wagging her tail.  She was bathed, nails trimmed, fur trimmed and just pampered in general.  The groomer brought her into the house where Nova happily pranced around so we could see how beautiful she looked.  She was wearing an adorabe pink bow in her fur between her ears, which she took out within the first 5 minutes.  The groomer said Nova was a very, very good dog and seemed to enjoy herself, which I am sure she did.  After the groomer left, Hunter and I kept telling Nova how beautiful she looked.  I was hoping in some way she would understand…….NO digging!

Well, my hopes were squashed.  When  Dave and I took Nova outside last night, low and behold, what was standing on the patio?  Yes, a chipmunk.  Nova took off like a bat out of hell.  The chipmunk gave her a run for her money and finally disappeared down its hole. Nova waisted no time digging like crazy in the mulch and the dirt, while Dave and I yelled at her to stop.  Who were we kidding, she wasn’t stopping for anything.  Dave had to go and pick her up and when he turned around, yup Nova had a face and paws covered in dirt.

Next week………..Musical Chairs
